Scripture – Matthew 6:3
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees them in secret will reward you.

Thoughts
One of the values I have always appreciated about the Brethren is humility.  The Anabaptist tradition, from which the Brethren emerged, cherished humility and simplicity, often expressed in their plain dress and simple meeting houses for worship.  Though we are not plain dressed today, and though our sanctuary is very nice and increasingly high tech, our white walls and plain windows are reminders of these deep and old values.

I catch glimpses of this humility often among our congregants who live out their faith in gentle and unassuming ways.  I think of those who serve in our ministries and on our teams quietly and faithfully.  I think of those who volunteer for ministries and with organizations in our communities that meet life sustaining and enriching needs for the most vulnerable among us.  I think of those who quietly, faithfully and anonymously offer financial support to our church and the service agencies of our communities and beyond.  These days I think of those who have made hundreds, if not thousands, of face coverings, sharing them freely with family, friends, the church and area health care and nursing facilities.  These gifts are often delivered with a request for anonymity.  I think of those who daily reach out to others with a phone call or a text or an email or a card in the mail to check in, to encourage, to let us each know that we are not alone and are loved.

So today I give thanks for these humble servants of our Lord.  May God richly bless you for your gentleness and all your kindnesses.  If you know someone like this, quietly and anonymously do something for them.

Prayer
Gracious God, “how silently, how silently the wondrous gifts are given.”  Thank you for the gentle way your spirit moves among us and through us, ministering to our needs through the simple and humble actions of others.  May we be inspired to pass on what we receive.  Amen.
